Sodick’s OPM250L+ combines metal 3D printing and precision machining in a single workspace, alternating both processes throughout production. This integrated approach delivers superior accuracy, surface finish, and dimensional control compared to conventional systems that machine only after printing. By machining features as they are built, the OPM250L+ produces complex geometries that are difficult or impossible with traditional manufacturing. The result is greater design freedom, often consolidating more than 20 mold components into a single high-performance mold that reduces assembly, improves reliability, and boosts productivity.

Among the key advantages of metal additive manufacturing is the ability to create conformal cooling channels that closely follow the contours of a mold. By positioning cooling channels nearer to the mold surface, conformal cooling delivers more uniform temperature control, reduces part deformation, and shortens cycle times. Using this technology, Sodick has achieved cooling time reductions of up to 50% and overall cycle time improvements of up to 21%, helping manufacturers increase productivity while maintaining consistent part quality.

Sodick’s dedicated OPM CAM software, OS-FLASH, integrates model import, laser data generation, machining optimization, and simulation in a single platform. Compatible with IGES, STEP, STL, and Parasolid files, OS-FLASH uses proprietary algorithms to rapidly generate laser and machining data. STL support enables mold production directly from scanned data, while automatic high-load detection optimizes feed rates in grooves, corners, and other critical areas. Built-in simulation verifies machining results, identifies overcut or unmachined sections, and accurately calculates machining time.

After machining is complete, the OPM250L+ automatically recovers unused metal powder from the build area and recycles it back into the material supply system. This efficient powder management process reduces material waste, lowers operating costs, and maximizes material utilization for more cost-effective metal additive manufacturing.

Sodick’s OPM250L+ features the same flat rigid linear motor technology that has helped make our EDM machines an industry benchmark for accuracy and reliability. Delivering 1G axis acceleration with no friction, wear, or backlash, these advanced drives provide smooth, stable motion and precise positioning. Directly integrated into the machine castings, the flat rigid linear motors enhance rigidity and digital motion control, helping the OPM250L+ achieve exceptional accuracy in metal additive manufacturing.

The Sodick Motion Controller precisely coordinates the high-speed, rigid linear motor drives through advanced NC control, delivering exceptional accuracy, rapid acceleration, and precise positioning. Developed through extensive research and innovation in Silicon Valley, the Sodick Motion Controller is a core technology that enhances machining performance, accuracy, and productivity across Sodick machine tools.
