Linear Motor Drives with Absolute Glass Scale Feedback

The Sodick UX650L Vertical Machining Center features Sodick’s patented energy saving flat rigid linear motors and linear scales with five-place decimal input and feedback. This combination results in unsurpassed speed and accuracy with almost zero backlash. This leads to a machine tool that can handle the most complex, three-dimensional contours better than any other machine in its class.

With an impressive acceleration rate of 1G, superior stability and the highest degree of precision down to nanometer are the top attributes of this innovation. The Sodick HSM has begun a new era in high precision milling. Unlike the conventional method of separately executing rough and fine milling, this new technology combines both machining passes in one operating mode. The solution is a rapidly rotating and traversing of small tool diameter that cuts to very fine depths.

MotionExpert analyzes NC programs created in commercially available CAM systems, estimating accurate machining times, predicting surface quality, and checking for penetration or gouging to prevent damage to the machine and tools. MotionExpert is fully compatible with Windows-based PCs

The UX650L features a 1,500 to 6,000 RPM spindle, standard.  HSK-E32 options are available with a max rpm of up to 60,000. This spindle is ideal for high-speed, high-precision direct milling of hard surfaces and features a long spindle life. The spindle is high-torque and highly durable and includes micro-oil mist lubrication.

The symmetrical “gate-type double column” structure keeps thermal displacement generated by the spindle within 3 μm. It features bridge construction made of FC300 cast iron and FCD-500 spheroidal cast iron. These materials provide excellent shock and vibration dampening as well as minimal thermal distortion in normal working environments. The machine’s bridge construction reduces the distance from spindle center to the Z-Axis guide ways, minimizing the opportunity for thermal distortion and simultaneously producing extreme rigidity. Bridge construction also eliminates the X-Axis table overhang commonly associated with C-frame construction.

Sodick’s new Jig Grinding function provides the UX Series the flexibility to perform high-precision, 3-axis grinding applications with ease. With independent Z-motion and high feed rate, the UX can achieve high surface quality along difficult contours. With this added capability, the UX series can eliminate the need for expensive, single-function jig grinders.

With the added capability of Sodick’s new High-Speed Drilling function the UX mill excels in production hole drilling, even with tight tolerance requirements. Through the use of a high speed cycle macro, production time on drilled holes can be cut in half.

A large 19” display screen incorporates a resistance-sensitive touch screen CNC. Within the display, mode selection buttons are on the right-edge of the screen, and function buttons are along the bottom-edge. Also equipped with a full keyboard, these elements together create a PC-like feel and instant familiarity allows for intuitive operation.

Torit Dust Collection System
As a leader in the industry, Donaldson Torit dust collection systems outperform competitor alternatives by 25% in both filtration capacity and airflow. This translates into lower operating costs, cleaner air, and up to twice the filter life of other solutions. Torit is the best choice for graphite machining with the lowest maintenance requirement on the market.

Directed Pressure Design
Sodick High Speed Milling centers offer a positive pressure system to actively direct graphite debris into the collection system, preventing the clouds and mess typically associated with graphite machining. Standard dust collection systems without active directed pressure generally prove inadequate for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, resulting in additional hours of cleaning and setup.

Unmatched Repeatability
Machining electrodes is a demanding job that requires not only tight tolerances but also immaculate repeatability. Even the best sinker EDM on the market can only perform as well as the electrodes it is provided, making graphite machining extraordinarily important. With flat rigid linear motor precision and sub-micron absolute scales, the UX series mill offers greater repeatability than any competitor on the market.
