Over the past decade, Prima Additive has grown from a pioneering idea in metal additive manufacturing into a company that now embodies the full potential of advanced laser technologies. Today, as Prima Additive by Sodick becomes AltForm, our CEO Paolo Calefati shares the story behind this evolution: how it began, what it means for our partners and customers, and where we’re heading next.

Today marks an important evolution in our journey. After joining the Sodick Group earlier this year, we are ready to embrace a broader vision, a stronger identity, and a renewed commitment to industrial laser manufacturing.

Pushing the Boundaries of Precision and Performance

At Sodick, innovation has always been at the heart of what we do. With the launch of the UX Series, we bring decades of expertise in high-speed milling and linear motor technology a step further—delivering unmatched precision, reliability, and automation-ready capabilities.

Designed for manufacturers who refuse to compromise on accuracy, the UX Series represents the latest evolution of our linear motor-driven milling machines, combining speed, accuracy, and consistency like never before.

Engineering Excellence: The UX Series Advantage

With a 40,000 rpm spindle, a next-generation tool changer, and backlash-free linear motor technology, the UX Series redefines what’s possible and delivers repeatable +/- 1-micron accuracy for the most intricate components. This latest iteration brings the most advanced features into a single machine tool, setting a new benchmark for precision machining.

“With the launch of the UX Series, we are ushering in a new era of high-speed milling—one defined by unmatched positioning accuracy, seamless automation, and long-term reliability,” says Mark Sanhamel, Vice President of Sodick Inc. “The UX450L and UX650L are the future of precision manufacturing, empowering manufacturers to push boundaries and achieve next-level efficiency.”

Key Features of the UX Series:

Efficiency Unlocked: In-House Electrode Machining for ALG Sinker EDMs

For manufacturers that rely on sinker EDM machines, the UX High-Speed Milling Centers are the ultimate solution for producing high-quality graphite electrodes in-house—eliminating the need for costly outsourced replacements with variable lead times.

By integrating the UX Series with Sinker EDM machines, shops can significantly reduce lead times, lower production costs, and improve electrode quality—ensuring precise, high-performance machining from start to finish.

Benefits of In-House Graphite Electrode Machining

For shops already utilizing EDM Sinkers, the UX Series is a game-changer—creating a seamless, high-efficiency ecosystem that enhances productivity and redefines the electrode manufacturing process.

Why Linear Motor Milling is a Game Changer

In precision machining, motion control is everything. The difference between linear motor-driven milling and traditional ball screw-driven systems is not just about speed—it’s about long-term accuracy, efficiency, and machine longevity.

Ball Screw vs. Rigid Linear Motor: What’s the Difference?

Traditional milling machines rely on ball screw-driven motion systems, which use a threaded shaft and ball bearings to convert rotary motion into linear movement. While this method has been widely used, it introduces inherent mechanical limitations.

Ball and Screw Limitations

Sodick’s rigid linear motor drive system eliminates these limitations entirely. Instead of relying on physical contact, our machines use magnetic fields to generate smooth, frictionless motion, ensuring absolute positioning accuracy with zero mechanical wear.

Linear Motor Benefits

The UX Series takes this proven technology even further—incorporating enhanced thermal stability, advanced cooling systems, and optimized machine rigidity.

The result? Unmatched repeatability, better part finishes, and the confidence that your machine will perform with the same accuracy for years to come—no mechanical wear, no compromise, just precision machining at its finest.

The Section 179 tax credit is a great opportunity for manufacturers to save big on new equipment investments through strategic tax deductions. And we’re here to help you understand and fully leverage your tax credit for 2023.  This comprehensive article will explore who and what Section 179 applies to, qualifying machine-specific purchases that will help increase your throughput and reduce your tax liability.

What is Section 179?

Section 179 is an IRS tax code designed to empower businesses by allowing them to deduct 80% of the purchase price of new qualifying equipment during the tax year of acquisition. This incentive isn’t limited to specific industries; it’s a versatile tool for businesses of all types and sizes. Section 179 provides a significant opportunity to boost capacity and revenue while simultaneously reducing the tax burden.

Eligible Purchases for 2023

The types of assets eligible for this tax credit change from year to year. In 2023, businesses have a wide array of eligible assets that qualify for Section 179 deductions.

Machinery and Tooling: Businesses can deduct 80% of the purchase price of equipment used for manufacturing, production, and other operational processes under Section 179. Machining-specific purchases that qualify for Section 179 deductions encompass a diverse range of machinery, including EDM machines, 3D printing technology, and milling equipment. To maximize the advantages of this tax incentive, new machine tools must be operational by the end of the tax year.

Vehicles: Vehicles, such as work trucks and specialized company vehicles, are also eligible for Section 179 deductions in 2023. This is particularly valuable for companies that rely on a fleet of vehicles to conduct their operations.

Ready-to-Ship Machines

To qualify for this tax credit, new machines must be purchased and delivered before December 31st. That means finding ready-to-ship machine tools is a critical part of your strategy to maximize your Section 179 benefits. As your dedicated machining partner, we have a variety of machines ready for immediate shipment.

If you’re looking to scale your mold-making production fast, we have a large inventory of state-of-the-art sinker EDMs ready to ship and deliver.
